Jos M. J. Paulusse was born in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands. He studied chemical engineering at the Technical University of Eindhoven. Internships at DSM in Geleen, the Netherlands, and Bayer in Krefeld-Uerdingen, Germany, spurred his interest in chemical research. In 2001 he carried out research in the laboratories of Prof. Claver at Universitat Rovira i Virigli in Tarragona, Spain, and he obtained his master degree in homogenous catalysis with Prof. Dieter Vogt.
He started as a graduate student at the Laboratory of Macromolecular and Organic Chemistry under guidance of Prof. Rint Sijbesma and Prof. Bert Meijer, completing his Ph.D. in 2006 with his thesis titled: Reversible Mechanochemistry of Coordination Polymers and Networks.
After a short post-doctoral stay with Prof. Meijer, he moved to the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2007 and worked as an NWO Rubicon post-doctoral fellow with Prof. Craig Hawker on the development of biodegradable vinyl polymers.
In January 2009 he started as assistant professor at Wageningen University, the Netherlands, working with Prof. Han Zuilhof on the development of fluorescent silicon nanoparticles and functional polymer nanoparticles, as well as the surface modification of inorganic substrates and their interaction with proteins.
He accepted a tenure track position as assistant professor at the University of Twente, the Netherlands in January 2012. His research program focuses, among others, on the development of new drug and gene delivery systems. As of January 2016, he holds a part-time position at UMC Groningen at the department of Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging, where he has initiated his research on hybrid imaging modalities.
Jos founded PACA Chem b.v. in September 2011, where he develops new monomers and polymers for a variety of applications. SpectriS-dot b.v., a company commercializing brightly emitting, non-toxic quantum dots, was founded together with Dr. Katerina Dohnalova in November 2015. In addition, he is chairman of the European Symposium on Controlled Drug Delivery and member of the board of the Netherlands Society for Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering.
