Disraëli Kusmus, better known as Gigi, was born and raised on the Caribbean island of Curaçao. After receiving her high school VWO diploma she moved to The Netherlands to study. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry with a specialization in Research and Development from Hogeschool Utrecht in 2012. During her bachelor’s studies she did two internships, one in the United States in the field of polymers and another one in medicinal chemistry.
Gigi continued with her studies by obtaining a Master’s degree from The Free University in Amsterdam in Molecular Design Synthesis and Catalysis. Her master’s thesis was done in New Zealand under the supervision of Dr. Gareth Rowlands. An additional internship was completed at The University of Amsterdam in collaboration with UbiQ under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jan van Maarseveen, Dr. Boris Rodenko and Dr. Farid El Oualid.
After traveling for two months in South East Asia and going back home to the Caribbean for four months, she returned to The Netherlands to further her career in organic chemistry. As of June 2017 she’s a PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Ir. Jos Paulusse at the University of Twente. She’ll be working on nanoparticles for biomedical imaging purposes.
